April Showers Bring May Flowers

It’s April! This year is definitely flying by. Probably because 2020 somehow managed to last ten years. Happy April! I hope everyone had a marvelous March and that you’re all enjoying your April thus far. I wanted to take the time to write about the little saying “April Showers Bring May Flowers”. We’ve all heard it before! Let’s talk about it!

There’s a couple different origin stories for the saying. One source says that it dates back to either the United Kingdom or Ireland. This source stated that April was a rather rainy and gloomy month which led to the growth and appearances of many flower species in the month of May. Another source states that Thomas Tusser is the author behind the saying, “Sweet April showers do spring May flowers.” And lastly, another source claims that the saying was first recorded in 1886 as a proverb to live by. Regardless of where the saying comes from, it’s a wonderful life lesson.

While flowers blooming is always something to look forward to, I think there’s a bigger lesson behind this saying. We’ve all bloomed throughout our lives. We’ve grown and discovered what it means to develop opinions, interests, hobbies, pet peeves - you name it! We’ve bloomed into ourselves. We know what it feels like to level up. But we aren’t always blooming. Sometimes we are in the waiting. And sometimes that waiting is in the middle of a rain shower.

Have you ever felt like a bad day just gets worse and worse? A day where just nothing seems to go your way? It happens to the best of us. That is what I would like to call your “April Showers” period. This is where you are preparing for your “May Flowers” period. Oftentimes we have to go through a breakdown before we have a breakthrough. There’s going to be times when it’ll feel like the world is ending and there’s no hope. But I promise you that this rain is simply watering your flowers. You are going to bloom!

Stop and think about what would happen if flowers never experienced rain. They would be wilted and they would never experience what it’s like to be alive and vibrant. Our “April Showers” periods throughout life remind us how special it is to experience those moments of happiness and growth. We wouldn’t appreciate things if we bloomed all year long. Our rainy days make us grateful for the days filled with an abundance of sunshine.

I love the saying, “There is nothing in nature that blooms all year long. So don’t expect yourself to do so either.”

We have to remind ourselves that we are not always going to be blooming. We will bloom. We will be successful. We will achieve our goals. But there’s going to be challenges along the way. And that is okay! The “showers” that we will endure will teach us to appreciate the sunshine.

Another quote I love says, “Nature doesn’t not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”

We are not in a hurry to bloom. We will bloom when it is our time. The longest showers always produce the brightest flowers. Stick with it and keep your chin up. Because April Showers Bring May Flowers!

🦋🌷☔️🌸
